Volvo Ocean Race Leg 2 – Ericsson 4 screeching

You expect it to be noisy on board a Volvo boat at speed , but not this kind of noisy:

Listen to an audio interview earlier today. Here, it was blamed on ‘foils’ – presumably dagger boards – but later reports claim the rudders are making this intolerable noise.

Even at dinghy speeds, a tiny nick or imperfection can set up a high-frequency vibration, and there can be a natural resonant frequency that is not sufficiently damped. Whatever it is, I’m glad I’m not on board at the moment.

The guys have earplugs available, but this calls for active noise-filtering headphones before you can relax and work normally.
