Whether you’re in normal sailing waters in the north, or down with Thomas Coville or the Vendée Globe skippers in the southern ocean, thick and hearty soups will go down well at this time of year.

I was very happy to hear that Kay McMahon has just posted a basic recipe for leek & potato soup on NotDelia.co.uk, with variations to suit the diet-challenged along with a proper one for hungry sailing folks, hill walkers, and other calorie-seekers.

The recipe is excellent, and designed for drinking from a mug. However, it’s a long time since Kay used to go off the Aberdeen coast in grandpa’s fishing boat, so she hasn’t got any nice, stable broad-bottomed mugs for the photo…

Although I’m only sailing a desk with a PC attached, it’s snowing outside and I’ve only got a woodburning stove and an oil-filled radiator for heating. There are plenty of leeks in my veg garden, so guess what I’ll be cooking for lunch tomorrow?

While places further north are getting significant snowfalls, all I’m getting here in the Limousin region of France is fine drizzle that isn’t quite cold enough to become sleet. I was just beginning to think that it was getting past the time for eating toast and Serrano ham or smoked salmon, backed up with lamb’s lettuce, as my lunch. Right on cue, my favourite cooking blog site has just published a gulaschsuppe recipe.

One of our dogs is allergic to the wheat that forms a large part of most dry dog food, so he gets cheapest cut stewing steak (actually, the day’s leftovers packaged as dog meat by our supermarket butcher). All I need to do is trim it a bit and I have the meat I need to try the recipe.

No point in eating winter fare without winter wine, so I’d better tip a bottle of red into a saucepan and hunt out the cloves and cinammon sticks to make some glühwein…
