The end of a 33 day voyage
At 16:00hrs on 1 July 2008, Belem passed the first light marking the channel up the St Lawrence Seaway to Quebec. The morning of 2 July dawned clear, bright and flat as a millpond as she motored towards a city now in view. A pleasant change from radar navigation in thick fog a day or so earlier.
The Oldest European City in North America
Quebec City was established in 1608, a year after Jamestown, Virginia. Since England did not consider herself part of Europe in those days, Quebec is the oldest European-established city in North America. The oldest Quebec settlement was the fur trading station, now the village of Tadoussac, which is older than Jamestown.
