Community Websites for Yachtsmen – yachtpals.com

Yesterday Tim Malbon found a couple of yachting ‘community websites’ – Yachtpals and SailingXperience – and wrote about them on jonnymalbon.com. I didn’t have time to investigate until today, and I’ve still only looked at Yachtpals. It’s certainly a place to hang out if you want information about open ocean sailing from the people who do it seriously.

Each member can create one or more groups which other members may ask to join. I took a look at the list, and it included 11 groups owned by Vendée Globe skippers and one owned by Hilary Lister. Some don’t have groups, but they are members – a link from Mike Golding’s buddy list took me to Robin Knox-Johnston’s page.

I had a good laugh, too. Someone posted a query asking if anyone knew the name of the person who was sailing a lug-sailed boat to Australia via South Africa. The response – Pete Goss is sailing Spirit of Mystery – was signed:

Pete Goss
